Organisations across all industries now view leadership as a key enabler of organisational performance and competitive advantage. The vast majority of organisations are investing a significant amount of time and funding into various leadership development activities. Research done by Deloitte in 2012 indicated that organisations in the USA have increased leadership development spending by 14% from 2011 levels to an estimated $13.6 billion in 2012. Of concern, Mercer recently found in a worldwide study of private enterprise that 32% of employees are planning on leaving their employers (compared to 19% two years ago) and that only 55% of employees believe their employer is a long term place to work compared with 65% over the last three years (Mercer, October 2012). This substantiates the need for organisations to commit to development of all leaders, not just high-potentials. But what is the real return on investment?
