Team Development

“You don’t build a business, you build people and then people build the business” – Zig Ziglar

TMS works with teams at all levels and at all stages of development, combining our experience with the latest thinking in organisation psychology and human dynamics, to develop motivated and effective teams that are capable of delivering on your organisation’s vision and goals.

A lack of cohesiveness in teams can occur for several reasons and can have significant impacts for the team and organisation more broadly. Is your team experiencing any of the following?

  • Poor communication, misunderstandings, and lack of information flow that results in errors, missed deadlines, and ineffective decisions.
  • Conflict and tension, resulting in a hostile and high-stress work environment.
  • Decreased productivity, duplication, inefficiency, or wasted effort.
  • Low morale and disengagement.
  • Ineffective problem-solving and an inability to harness diverse perspectives or collaborate openly.
  • Impaired learning and development that stifles personal and professional growth.
  • Reduced work quality due to a lack of collaboration and shared standards.
  • Strain on leaders who spend considerable time mediating conflicts and aligning the team, rather than focusing on strategic goals.

TMS’ Approach to Team Development

Building Trust

At the foundation of any cohesive and high-performing team are trust and psychological safety. TMS applies a range of models and theories from the field of psychology to assist managers, leaders, and staff to successfully support each other and work cohesively in a team. Using an adapted version of Patrick Lencioni’s 5 Dysfunctions of a Team framework, TMS facilities a process that focuses teams on developing the five key behaviours that build a cohesive and high-performing team.

Relationship-Building

To encourage effective communication and collaboration in teams, TMS facilitates specific activities and processes that support building more effective working relationships. Within a team development workshop setting, TMS will focus on:

  • Creating a sense of personal connection between members of a team
  • Building a better understanding of behavioural preferences and communication styles at work
  • Understanding how to communicate effectively – developing skills in active listening, checking, questioning, and non-verbal communication
  • Understanding and committing to respectful communication – developing self-awareness and insight into the impacts of our words and actions on others

Team Profiling Tools

Our TMS consultants are accredited in several profiling tools and applies these as needed to facilitate deeper team insights. Working with profiling tools provides teams with a shared language to communicate about, and leverage, differences effectively. Examples of the tools we use include:

DISC Profile

The DISC assessment examines the following behavioural factors:

  • Dominance: How an employee responds to problems and challenges
  • Influencing: How an employee influences others to their point of view
  • Steadiness: How an employee responds to the pace of the environment
  • Compliance: How an employee responds to rules and procedures set by others

VIA Character Strengths Assessment

The VIA enables us to explore the strengths of a team by:

  • Enabling a better understanding of the team’s unique configuration of character strengths and how this influences the team dynamic and performance
  • Driving team conversations about how to use strengths to create a more cohesive, satisfied, and productive team
  • Exploring the strengths of the group, as well as the unique strengths that each person brings to the team.

Innovative and Interactive Problem-Solving Activities

TMS uses innovative activities to encourage participant engagement at workshops. Using problem-solving activities that are experiential and multi-sensory enables teams to learn how to work together in a safe environment that breaks down barriers and engages all interpersonal styles.

Innovative Remote Delivery

TMS effectively leverages a range of interactive tools, such as menti-meter, Teams, and Zoom to offer equally engaging and interactive remote team development opportunities.
